Ranjan Lakhanpal

He Lost His Father And Son To Excesses Of The State. But This Human Rights Activist Is Still...

Had such tragedies happened to any other man, he would have been broken, perhaps irreparably. But not human rights activist and lawyer Ranjan Lakhanpal, who lost both his father and son to excesses of the state.

“But those two incidents only prodded me to fight harder against the dispossessed, the weak and the vulnerable,” said the 52-year-old who’s taken up more than 10,000 cases of human rights abuses. "I know the pain of a sufferer."

Tears still fill Lakhanpal’s eyes as he talks about the death of his father and, much later, his son. “My father, an advocate like me, was arrested under Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) because he raised his voice against imposition of Emergency and arbitrary arrests being made at that time,” he said, going back in time. “He died in jail."

What happened years later was worse. “My son, just 10, was killed by the police because I was fighting cases against them. They had earlier threatened me repeatedly, but I took no note. When I didn’t agree, they did this to put pressure on me,” said the man who’s now a rallying point for those taking up rights issues.

The legal eagle, who started his practice in the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 1980, has been instrumental in freeing 250 Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails. Not that he’s spared Pakistan. “I filed a petition in the Pakistan Supreme Court for violating the human rights of Lieutenant Sourabh Kalia and five other Indian soldiers who died during Kargil war. This was the first case to be filed by an Indian in Pakistan,” added Lakhanpal, who’s been crying hoarse about Bhikiwind’s Sarabjit Singh, awaiting execution in the Kot Lakhpat jail across the border.

Not one to back out from a tough, and often dangerous fight, the lawyer was one of the first ones to leap up to defend the accused in the infamous Jammu and Kashmir sex scandal. “Everyone needs a fair hearing,” is his simple argument against all charges, including that of treason.

So what’s been his best battle? He remembers the touching case of POK resident Shenaz Praveen Kausar and her India-born daughter Mobin. In a suicide bid, Kausar had jumped into the Jhelum in POK but survived and reached the other side of the river in India. She was immediately arrested and was later raped in jail. Kausar then delivered Mobin. But that was just one part of her unfortunate story. The Pakistan government agreed to take Kausar back but refused Mobin entry, saying she is Indian.

Lakhanpal filed a PIL in Jammu and Kashmir High Court for their release and adequate compensation. The court ordered cops to release Kausar and Mobin. It also granted Rs 3 lakh to them. After the matter got highlighted at the international level, Pakistan government too took back both Kausar and her daughter.

“This case is close to my heart because I helped a woman and her child who were totally helpless in a foreign land,” said Lakhanpal who sees Mother Teresaas his guiding light.

to correct my dearest sir as per i know there is no such name in whole of india which with a single hand support of his own was capable of releasing 400 prisoners without any damn help of any authority.as per the fees part he has to run his house which he does by professional soliciting which is done only with people who can pay.he has filed more than 12000 free of cost human right cases.in my case i am satisfied dealing with a legend of its kind.i can back my statement by giving my number 9812036878.comment givers should have a look at their own life if they have done anything which makes them eligible to comment on anyone

These people who are commenting ill and doubting the integrity and credibility of Mr Lakhanpal are none other than those corrupt and inhuman police officers who have been brought to book in various cases. They in fact are not left with any other option but to abuse the sanctity of a humanitarian by this medium where they know cannot be held for. Hence I urge the people who read this post and its comments to analyse with a logical mind.
The beauty is for every one hate comment we see three in praise of this gentleman.

Mr lakhanpal is a cheat. He has open a human rights organization where people are being mislead by being part of that organization. Rather that organisation is just a mere way by which Mr lakhanpal advertise himself. Most of the indians who are unaware about laws and judicial system becomes victims of such lawyers. On the name of human rights it is a tactic to hook clients. I myself been cheated by Mr lakhanpal. I paid him Rs 45000 in the year 2001 but he never filed my case of my property rather he again charged me Rs 10000 more. Till date i never got justice as my case was being mishandled

Mr Ranjan Lakhanpal is a businessman in robs of a lawyer he has no knowledge of law as most of his cases are dismissed or are withdrawn by him from the high court. there are may better lawyers and designated senior advocates than him in high court who perform better.

Most do-gooders just go about doing what they have to and take the occasional word of praise or gratitude which comes their way as an encouragement. But what of Ranjan Lakhanpal, who, while doing his bit for the hapless, has encountered more of derisive comments from colleagues than applause? Some even call him anti-national. Yet, this human rights lawyer-activist has stoically been going about his task. His clients are people trapped in a no-mans land of sorts . the scores of Pakistanis lodged in Indian jails for minor offences like straying across the border, or jumping a city-specific visa to visit friends in other cities.keep up the good work sir. You have to be doing exceptionally well to invite jealousy and hate as losers and demeaning persons strive on venom spewing. Hope to see more persons like you. Keep it up

Ranjan Lakhanpal took my case by giving me assurance that we will definitely win the case but eventually I found out that in my writ petition he never appeared after filling it. All these above mentioned comments are very surprising as to me these do not sound. convincing. His office charges exorbitant amount of fee on every visit even his clerks are deceiving. Ultimately I had to struggle to even get my file back from their office as the office staff is very rude. They are just the worst form of lawyers in the High court. Such lawyers should be banned from practice and strict actions should be taken by government against them when they publicize themselves.

Mr Ranjan Lakhanpal is a very causal Lawyer and he has no respect for his clients. He is very sweet when he is accepting the case and fee after that he never answers his phone. His office is full of unprofessional lawyers who doesn't even know how to speak English.

Friends please think twice before hiring them as they are cheats and fraud lawyers.
